National Geographic Channel
Million Dollar Moon Rock Heist

Premieres March 4, 2012, 9 p.m. ET/PT

In 2000, one Co-op showed an inordinate interest in the cache of moon rocks kept at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, repeatedly visiting the lab to examine them. Then the moon rocks mysteriously disappeared.

Moon Rock Heist follows the trail of international intrigue surrounding the recovery of the rocks and reveals how law enforcement finally tracked down the thieves.

Dr. Everett Gibson, who operated the office and safe that the rocks were stolen from at NASA, came to speak at College Station a few weeks ago about the heist. It's a fascinating story about how they tracked these people (idiots) down and caught them.

Unfortunately, over 30 years of moon rock research Dr. Gibson had documented in several log books were stolen, thrown out, and never recovered.

National Geographic on cable will air this Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern time in the U.S. how a NASA employee stole moon rocks.

Who's going to watch it?

I just watched it tonight. Maybe I shouldn't have as although it was very well done, the brazen theft and the stupid discarding of Dr. Gibson's research notebooks has probably elevated my bloodpressure just a bit more than just the theft of the rocks themselves. All that lost research... for nothing.

I am just glad it took an honest mineral collector to get the ball rolling on the FBI.
