I have always wanted to see Walter Cronkite's coverage of the first Saturn V launch. So far I have been unable to find it anywhere. Does anyone know if it is available somewhere? |

Same here! I have always been fascinated by Apollo 4 since it was the first launch of the Saturn V. No one had ever seen anything quite like it before.I remember watching on TV that morning (I was 8) and my eyes popping open when I got a look at the flame under those big engines. It was so much more powerful than what we had seen on Gemini. I read after the fact that the shock waves had almost caused the CBS studio to fall apart. I do remember Walter Cronkite almost bellowing "it's going through the clouds!" You could tell he was enthralled at the sight. |

Although the video is not included, the six LP set that Time-Life put out in 1969 did include a portion of the audio from Cronkite's coverage. eBay usually has one or two sets of these albums for sale each week. |

We are seeking to attain at least a portion of this broadcast for our Saturn V disc. Right now it is looking as if we will probably be able to include it. If so I will post a note. |

I am privileged to have Walter Cronkite's grandson in my class at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. I haven't had a chance to talk to him much yet (27 students in this lab class), but based on the first class he is a very hard worker. |

So will we ever get to see this footage? Has any progress been made in locating it? |

We can hope that some amateur videographer was at home aiming his clunky 16mm film camera at the B&W console TV back then. Footage like that may turn up some day. Hey, it could happen. |

It's not much, but he's at the very end of this video. |

It's on Youtube - not the part showing Cronkite but you can hear his commentary. |

The raw, uncontrolled enthusiasm that is heard in that video is what is missing today. No doubt about it. |
