I recently ran across a novel set on the USS Hornet in the days before and leading up to the Apollo 11 recovery. It's called "Gracie's Ghost: The Haunting" by Frederick Loeb (Amazon). The description reads as follows:
An accidental spiritual quest. A funny romantic tragedy. A behind-the-scenes story of the U.S.S. Hornet CVS-12 and the Apollo 11 recovery. Steeg Patterson believed in three things: God, Country, and Gracie Ofterdahl's love...
I received the book in yesterday's mail and plan to read it within a few days. I contacted the author and ordered it directly from him and he inscribed it for me. Turns out Loeb was stationed aboard the Hornet back in the 60s. He did lots of research and went to great lengths to get the details of his fictional backstory right. Hey, how many novels are out there set on the Hornet during the days of Apollo 11?

Don't know, but I'm sure interested in what you have to say about the book. It sounds fun.
