Details have appeared in the Chinese media of a major forthcoming movie based on their manned Shenzhou programme. It is called "Flying" — 飞天 — in Chinese script.

Some neat photographs from the report here.

The following is a translation of the most comprehensive synopsis I've been able to find on the Chinese websites.

The movie "Flying" includes the most impressive China film stunts

August First Film Studio is producing the spectacular space movie "Flying" is a key film in the tribute to the 90th anniversary of feature films. The film depicts the story of the flights of Chinese astronauts, and the film spans from the conclusion of the familiar Shenzhou 7 to the launch of Shenzhou 11. This was the first description of PLA Military Films Division and due to filming restrictions, the film all the rocket, rocket launcher scenes, the space station, etc., all done by computer effects. Large number of special effects and stunts are included, the most ever in any movie of the August film studio.

Since the Sept. 20 start the crew has rushed to Gansu, Beijing, Tianjin, Inner Mongolia and other places to shoot, travelling thousands of kilometers. Recently, they have been to the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, Beijing Aerospace City, Inner Mongolia and Hubei, the two main satellite and other parts of the landing site has been completed filming, recording a total of more than 1,200 types of scene shots.

Plot begins following Shenzhou 7 back-up crew from first astronaut group selection, Zhang Tiancong, Zhou Guan, Li Dawei. Trio once again unsuccessful to make flight. Zhang Tiancong wife, daughter and family at home were extremely disappointed. After a time away to resolve some family issues, Zhang returns to training and splits from his previous crew mates. Team now includes several new astronauts of the second generation, including two women pilots. Zhang is joined with a group of several second generation taikonauts involved in preparations for the flight to the first ‘space station’.

Training is varied of difficult and protracted, as always, Zhang Tiancong rivals now new astronauts Lin Chaoyang, Wu Changfeng. Flight mandate imminent, for the new mission Shenzhou 10, and decided the flight will be executed by three astronauts, two men and a woman. After the astronaut selection, Zhang Tiancong and Zhou Xiaosu (female) form a team, and in the subsequent training the general opinion is they will form the first choice crew. However, in the final decision on the Shenzhou 10, the command decided to change the "game" rules, so that the best crew becomes backup. Zhang Tiancong's group held back and another team is chosen, the reason is because of the risk considerations, around Shenzhou 10, and if there is trouble in space, the other crew should perform difficult and dangerous rescue mission.

As expected, and sure enough, Shenzhou 10 and space station during operation in space, was suddenly hit an unknown object, causing damage to power systems. Zhang Tiancong team are scrambled and Shenzhou 11 launches from Hainan launch sit. Zhang emerges from the capsule to the space station solar panel implementation of the rehabilitation and repair and makes possible the and safe return of the Shenzhou 10.

"Flying" is expected in cinemas by July 2011.

In June 2011, the August First Film Studio of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Cultural Division will release the movie "Flying" on the lives, training, families and the mission of the Shenzhou 10 mission. Well-known Chinese actress Wang Jing plays the role of Lt Xue Yimeng, planned to become China's first woman in space.

This movie now seems to be moving towards a cinema release in China over the next few weeks, and a publicity campaign is now underway. A few new 'stills' have been released which are included in this report. The movie has now acquired the English language subtitle 'Shenzhou 11'.

This may be to avoid confusion with the 'real' Shenzhou 9 and 10 missions due to fly in the next year or so.

Expect a DVD release later in the year.

Cinema trailers of differing durations can now be viewed here.

Although set in the very near future, the Space Station in this movie is substantially bigger that the images of the proposed Tiangong 1 module!

Release date in China is 1st July.

Apologies if the video doesn't play in your country. That is sometimes the way of things with Chinese websites.

My Chinese being, for what it's worth, more non-existent than simply rusty, I just have to ask. In the title near the top of the page, what is the context in the Chinese language references to Apollo 13 (阿波罗13) and "science fiction" (科幻)?

My machine translation tells me that the headline says that 'Flying' is not 'science fiction' but compares to 'Apollo 13', suggesting that the theme is grounded in the real world, and not simply Sci-Fi.

Thanks for the amplification. Sounds like it's going to be a real cliff hanger.
