On Capt. Bean's website, there is a page to inquire about commissioning a painting. I have no idea how much that would cost, beyond probably being really expensive, but I got to thinking: what specific moment would I want a painting of? So just for the fun of it, if you could commission a painting, what would you want? |

I always wanted Alan Bean to do a Skylab painting. I would like to see Pete Conrad and Joe Kerwin EVA 2 Skylab 2 mission. Or Garriott and Lousma EVA 1 Skylab 3 mission. |

I'd rather not commission a painting. I like the idea that the paintings (prints) I buy are what Alan saw or envisioned in his mind on his trip to the moon. But I would also like to see his visual remembrances of the Skylab mission he commanded - that's a good idea. |

I too would rather not commission a painting. I do collect art and have always preferred to run through the artists portfolio and discover what they were drawn too. With that said I also have noticed I’ve never seen a Skylab painting from Capt. Bean. I got to speak with him briefly a couple of years ago and asked if he has ever painted any Skylab work. He said no but he should include some from those missions. There are some great photos of the second manned mission of all three but very few of the first and only one of Ed Gibson from the third. I've recently read that while Bill Pogue and Jerry Carr were on their final EVA of Skylab 4 they each took photos of each other while on the EVA. Upon getting back into Skylab Pogue noticed the screws holding the film back on the Hassleblad where loose and the full film roll was exposed. Apparently screws being able to loosen on their own in a hazard of working in micro-gravity. So if I were to commission a great piece of work from Capt. Bean I'd love for him to put brush to aircraft board and use his personal and unique knowledge of Skylab to paint nice work of both Col.'s Pogue and Carr on their EVA. It's a missing piece of recorded space history and Bean is just the right artist to fill the void. I’d love to see both Jerry's and Bill's face to finally see a realistic image of them on their mission 36 years ago. |

I always liked the concept behind "Conrad, Gordon, and Bean - The Fantasy" and think that a similar theme could be carried over to Apollo 13. Perhaps he could paint a scene of Lovell stepping off of Aquarius's ladder or he and Haise working together in front of the LM. |

One of the most significant events in Alan's space career must have been the lightning strike of Apollo 12. Depicting this event in paint would be interesting. |

About 10 years ago I asked Alan about him not doing any paintings about his Skylab missions. He told me that in order to excel and be recognized an artist needs to focus on a single type of painting. So, just like there are artists that only paint landscapes and flowers, Alan chose to focus only on his lunar experience. He told me he would not be doing any Skylab topics. Maybe he's changed his mind? |

I just wish I could afford to commission Alan Bean to do a painting for me. |

I'd like to see the interior of the CM and the elation of the three friends reunited in it butt-naked after LM re-docking. |

Pretty sure only two of them were butt-nekkid--no reason for Gordon to have been. If that's the case, I would think that would allow for some, ahem, strategic positioning as far as viewing perspective goes. |

Regarding whether he ever considered painting Skylab, I asked Capt. Bean the same question at Spacefest last year. He gave two reasons for not taking that on. First, there's a "whole set of hardware" that has to be modeled in order to represent it appropriately. Second, and most important, he said that future generations will look back on our time and remember Apollo, not Skylab. He wants to spend his remaining years painting the story Mankind's greatest voyages from the standpoint of someone who was a participant. |

It's only $195/sq in. He's up to his neck on commissions, though. We'll have some originals we own for sale at Spacefest III. |
