During an Astronomy lecture someone in the public asked if there are non-science-fiction space artists...

I explained the line between historic or science illustrations/paintings and SF scenery is a thin line but there are some "real space" artists, especially nowadays to illustrate how extra-solar planets might look like.

So I started a list:

  • Chesley Bonestell
  • Ed Hengeveld
  • Don Dixon
  • Didier Florentz
  • Adolf Schaller
  • Kim Poor
  • Lynette Cook

Philip, great thread!

Be sure to add cS member Tim Gagnon ("KSCartist") to the list. He's done some fantastic, VERY cool things... yep, definitely a "real space" artist!

Thanks for the vote Anne. But no list would be complete without Norman Rockwell. His portraiture is better than photography.

Of course Paul Calle but don't forget his son Chris (and keep your eyes on Ian Calle -he's got great artistic DNA).

Let's not forget that space art is not limited to fine art. There's graphic art and Jorges Cartes (KAPTEC) is a genius overcoming the limitations imposed in that area and there's music too - right Anne?"

Thanks for the mention! It seems like another lifetime (I haven't been able to paint for 15 years.)

There is a space art guild -- the IAAA, which I was a founder and first president of during 1984-1988. We have most (200 or so) of the world's top space artists as members. Have a look if you have time. Some pretty amazing stuff!

We consider it an insult to be thought of as merely SF artists. A lot of research goes into our work.

How on earth did I miss this site before now?! Wow, oh WOW! What a beautiful site!! I'm so glad you posted it, Kim. A perfect and inspiring distraction, especially on such hot days.

  • Paul Calle
  • Chris Calle
  • Robert McCall
  • Don Dixon
  • Kim Poor
  • Ed Hengeveld
  • and many more.
I would also like to add Lou Drendal. Though mainly an aviation artist he has also done some excellent space paintings.

You're always so kind, Tim, remembering us music-folks. Yes, there's the music... but I am always in TOTAL AWE of all you guys (and gals) who can put a brush to a canvas and transmit the essence and emotion and even realism of the stars and the planets! That you can really SEE... and then transmit that to some tangible form in front of our eyes! That act, that transmission, to me, is truly mindboggling... downright inspiring.

Okay, Philip, back to you -- how is the "real space artists" list shaping up now? Where do we stand? This is very interesting!

I forgot two of my favourites.

Alan Bean, of course.

I love some of Alexei Leonov's work. "Cyclone Over Singapore" is a great painting.

It is a bit strange for me to see my name in a list of such distinguished artists, people I consider to be the best in this field. But it is also very pleasant...

Speaking of space artists, Experience The Planets is "an on-going project to realize views around the solar system as seen through the eyes of artists."
ETP breaks away from fanciful notions of space and and embraces the more challenging task of creating illustrations informed by scientific fact and hypothesis.

I'll throw in the name of Howard Koslow, whose artistry also extends to cachets and stamps for non-space covers.

I recently ran across some very nice work by David Robinson. He is a digital artist who uses the 3D program Bryce to produce some very nice speculative manned space concept art. According to his website, his work "has been featured by Ad Astra magazine, the Mars Society, Space.com, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Hemet Science and Water Museum, Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Haper & Collins books, Smithsonian books, Cambridge University Press, The Space Review, the Sci-Fi Channel, as well as numerous other aero-space publications."

Let us not forget Richard Bizley who has recently posted some of his amazing Apollo 16 Lunar Rover pictures on this website.

Lets not forget the Soviet/Russian artist Andrei Sokolov. I'm sure most of us have seen his work, maybe without knowing it is his.

Sokolov worked with Leonov frequently, and his work covers both science fact and - fiction.

All times are CT (US)
