I recently purchased a 16"x20" litho of the picture below, and I was curious as to whether anyone had any ideas to the vintage, artist, etc. of the artwork. In the border, centered under the image is the caption, "Returning To Orbiting CSM," and at the right-hand margin under the image is the caption, "Lunar Excursion Module."Any thoughts? Thanks! After posting this (and thanks for the offline comments!) I came across this, which was on page 28 of "Building Moonships": The lunar surface is identical, but the ascent stage has been reworked in a couple of areas, most noticeably rounding out some of the angles, and changing the forward hatch and the supports for the RCS quads. The porch and ladder have been added to the descent stage. |

I believe it to be a Grumman painting from 64-65 vintage. I have seen it before and it is not a North American Aviation painting.J.M. Busby Aerospace Legacy Foundation Downey, CA |

I don't think I could have been an artist for Grumman or Rockwell in the 1960s or 1970s, as I hate messing with a finished painting. Artist impressions were constantly being altered to incorporate the latest changes in the design of the CSM or the LM. The same is true for the early concepts of the Shuttle system. There are several of these artworks that exist in three or four different versions...Ed | |
