Does any know of a good historical book on Apollo 8? I know there are a few books that include some material on Apollo 8 (for example, short chapter in "Lost Moon"), but I was wondering if there is a good book devoted to Apollo 8. NASA EP-66 (Apollo 8: Man Around the Moon) is a nice summary, but I am looking for something a little more substantial (but not too technical). Thanks. |

There is Robert Zimmerman's Genesis: The Story Of Apollo 8, which was released in 1999. |

You could do a lot worse than "In the Shadow of the Moon," which Francis French and I co-wrote and which is still readily obtainable. This is the social or human story of the thrust to go to the moon and contains the very personal recollections of the crewmembers involved, plus it tells of the other Apollo and Soyuz missions in the lead-up to landing humans on the moon. There is a long chapter on the flight of Apollo 8 which was written with the kind assistance of crewmember Bill Anders. |

Not to mention "Countdown" by Frank Borman and Robert Serling, Chapters 10 and 11 (copyright 1988, Silver Arrow Books, ISBN 0-688-07929-6) and "Lost Moon" by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger, Chapter 2 (copyright 1994, Houghton-Mifflin, ISBN 0-395-67029-2) for some first-hand accounts. |

I like to collect mission-specific books and can recommend Zimmerman's Genesis which I'm lucky enough to have signed by all three crewmembers. |

You might also want to have a look at my recent "Earthrise: How Man First Saw the Earth" (Yale, 2008). It aims to put the Apollo 8 mission into historical and human context, and focuses on the view of Earth and its impact. You can see the pictures and read a sample chapter. The most vivid account is in French and Burgess's 'In the Shadow of the Moon' (2007). And you can hear the crew talking about the event. |

I am looking for definitive accounts of the Apollo 8 mission. As far as I am aware the only first hand account is by Frank Borman in his autobiography "Countdown". There is a very good National Geographic magazine that appeared after the mission but does anyone have any leads for other books/articles specifically about Apollo 8? Editor's note: Threads merged. |

You can't get more 'definitive' than the Apollo 8 Mission Report (NASA MSC, Feb. 1969, 252 pp). |
