Apple has introduced iTunes U, wherein college and university faculty members can post the audio and/or video of their course lectures for students (and the public) to easily access.Among the initial participating schools is MIT, which has uploaded its Fall 2005 semister of Aircraft Systems Engineering (16.885J). For that term, the class focused on systems engineering analysis of the space shuttle, offering the study of both the design and operation of the shuttle. The course, led by Profs. Aaron Cohen and Jeffrey Hoffman (STS-51D, STS-35, STS-46, STS-61, STS-75), featured frequent lectures by outside experts including Bob Sieck, Gordon Fullerton, Chris Kraft and Wayne Hale. The course syllabus includes: - The Origins of the Space Shuttle
- Space Shuttle History
- Orbiter Sub-System Design
- The Decision to Build the Shuttle
- Orbiter Structure + Thermal Protection System
- Propulsion - Space Shuttle Main Engines
- Aerodynamics - (From Sub - to Hypersonic and Back)
- Landing and Mechanical Systems
- OMS, RCS, Fuel Cells, Auxiliary Power Unit and Hydraulic Systems
- The DoD and the Space Shuttle
- Use of Subsystems as a Function of Flight Phase
- Aerothermodynamics
- Environmental Control Systems
- Ground Operations - Launching the Shuttle
- Space Shuttle Accidents
- Guidance, Navigation and Control
- Mission Control 1
- Mission Control 2
- Design Process as it Relates to the Shuttle
- EVA and Robotics on the Shuttle
- Systems Engineering for Space Shuttle Payloads
- Test Flying the Space Shuttle
All 22 courses/tracks can be downloaded at no cost from iTunes U (NOTE: iTunes software needed for link to work). |

I audited this course. It was held the semester after the Engineering Apollo course. I have my notes somewhere in my study. We had many of the same students in the class from the prior course. Great class. Chris Kraft was great as a guest lecturer. |
