I was wondering if anyone has heard of a book titled "History of Rocketry and Space Travel"? It is by Wernher von Braun and Frederick I. Ordway III.

My copy has the name Junius R. Tribe on the outside of the book (it's leather bound) and his autograph on the title page. Any information would be appreciated.

You can be pleased: a quick look at the frequently asked questions on Boggs Space Books shows that they place it in their rarest books list.

I read somewhere, sometime back, that the "History of Rocketry and Space Travel" limited edition, leather bound and embossed, authored by Wernher von Braun and Frederich Ordway was an edition of 20,000. Does anyone know if this is accurate?

My leather-bound copy is marked "Limited Edition" at the bottom of the spine, but there is nothing in the book to indicate how many such copies were printed.

First off, the name referred to could be John R. Tribe, an Apollo and Shuttle lead propulsion engineer that started his aerospace career in 1954 until 1997. He was one of the first shuttle team members at KSC interfacing with NASA and Rockwell and retired as chief engineer of the shuttle orbiter for KSC operations.

As to the special edition leather-bound book by von Braun and Ordway, I have one given to me by veteran aerospace journalist Mary Bubb with her name embossed in gold on the outside cover. With the book there was a letter, which I am trying to locate, that may have indicated 1,000 issues were gifted to certain folks within the nation's leading aerospace communities.

Thank you both for your reply. Generally, a limited edition quantity is printed in the book somewhere. You are correct, the quantity is not printed in this edition. I think Ken’s number of 1,000 sounds reasonable. 20,000 would have been an extremely large run for a limited edition. I have seen one with the original box, but I have never seen the letter that came with it. If you happen to find that letter, I sure would like to see a copy. That would be the gem that would tie all the scattered pieces together.
