Superb article in Spaceflight July 2008 by Joel Powell with unique photos "Monkey's ill-fated voyage" on the subject of the only living creature ever launched onboard a Delta Rocket: macaca monkey "Bonny"... it flew onboard Delta Rocket 70 on 28 June 1969 for a longer orbital flight until 7 July 1969...IP: Logged |

I agree with you on that one!Asif's article is one of the most interesting I've read in Spaceflight magazine for a long time and he is certainly writing the best stuff on Soviet space history at the moment. Dom IP: Logged |

p344: What's the actual name of the Soviet person who gave a speech at BIS Headquarters in September 1961? First paragraph says "Tokayev" and the next one (and the footnotes) "Tokaty". Also, I'm not sure that 1987 was the 20th anniversary of the space age! (p349) And talking about the space age, why is it sometimes capitalized? (p349 first and third column). Chris. IP: Logged |

Chris that article appeared in the Vol 41 N°11 issue (November 1999) Just saw the article in BIS Spaceflight magazine October 2008 (pages 376-385) by Ken Kremer... astounding! Great to get a 10 pages overview of the mission and superb mosaic photos by UMSF forum members. Also good article by Dwayne Day on the future 12-wheeled lunar truck! IP: Logged |

For those interested, Asif Siddiqi kindly provided the answer to my query: "This is a little bit of a complicated issue. This person was born with the name Grigoriy Aleksandrovich Tokaty. His was a rather unusual name in the USSR (Tokaty was born in the north Caucasus). When he was older he 'Russianized' his last name to 'Tokayev' (or in the Library of Congress system: Tokaev). After he defected to the West, he used both 'Tokaty' and 'Tokaev' as well as the hyphenated 'Tokaty-Tokaev.' If you look at his list of publications, the author's name is different in different sources. This was the source of the confusion on my article. I hope that answers your question." quote: Also, I'm not sure that 1987 was the 20th anniversary of the space age!
That's a typo!Chris. IP: Logged |

BIS Spaceflight magazine December 2008 has an excellent 9-pages article by Robert April: "Where next Columbus? NASA's Future Planetary Exploration Missions".Overview with proposed timeline for lunar and Mars missions, outer planet missions and missions of opportunity. Good photos of the Mars Science Laboratory "Scarecrow" vehicle, the next Mars rover. IP: Logged |
