Why do astronauts sign baseballs? Because they were baseball players...Courtesy Francis French comes this photo taken during a baseball game between the astronauts and engineers at Downey, done largely as a morale-booster after the Apollo 1 fire. Among the astronauts pictured are Stu Roosa, Fred Haise, Alan Bean and Jim McDivitt. If you look carefully (click on the photo to enlarge), the players' shirts look to have an astronaut Snoopy on the back.  |

Its a fake setup photo! All the kids are work experience kids from the astronaut office, why else would they have the mail code on their baseball caps!  (Plus Haise has had to borrow a jacket from Armstrong for the photoshoot.) |

I don't think their playing in Downey, California. But in Paramount, California and at the Paramount High School.Why you ask? Zoom in on the leg of the boy standing in the dugout and you will see an envelope or paper that says Paramount High School. |
