The John Glenn Observatory and Astronomy Park in Hocking Hills, Ohio, dedicated to the late U.S. Senator and astronaut, was in the making almost two years before his death in December 2016. Now, the site will serve as a tribute by inspiring future generations of night sky gazers and explorers, reports WOSU Radio.
An organizer of the project, Omie Warner, says their efforts have received added support since Glenn's passing. Private donors have raised about 60 percent of their $1.6 million goal, allowing them to begin construction early this spring. Warner says the park will be completed by October or November.

Set in the wilderness of the Hocking Hills, the public park will include space for stargazing and eventually a telescope for Ohio State University researchers.

The John Glenn Astronomy Park is now open. CNBC recently got a look at some of the attractions inside the new park.
The park opened to the public on June 21 – the summer solstice and the longest day of the year. It features an enclosed 540-square-foot observatory with a retractable roof, as well an 80-foot in diameter Solar Plaza. The low wall that encircles the plaza is notched to offer framed views of the sun on key days, and a standing sundial allows visitors to see the Sun’s movement.
