Ohio airport renamed for original Mercury astronaut John Glenn

The United States' second international airport to be named for a NASA astronaut honors the first American to orbit the Earth.

Ohio lawmakers on Wednesday (May 25) voted to rename the Port Columbus International Airport for astronaut John Glenn. The last surviving member of the original Mercury 7 pilots, Glenn became the first U.S. space explorer to circle the planet on Feb. 20, 1962.

"I believe it is only fitting to rename the [airport] after John Glenn for his countless contributions to space exploration and to Ohio's rich aviation history," said the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, Clifford Rosenberger, in a statement. "There is no doubt that he is an American hero, and I'm honored that we are taking steps to further secure his legacy here in our great state."

Wonder if they will have a brief ceremony there in the near future, with Mr. Glenn
(and wife) there...

An airport renaming celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the airport's center ticket lobby. John and Annie Glenn will be in attendance, as will:
  • Susan Tomasky, Columbus Regional Airport Authority Board Chair
  • Clifford Rosenberger, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives
  • Andrew Ginther, Mayor of the City of Columbus
  • John O'Grady, President of Franklin County Board of Commissioners
The celebration is being held in a public area, but it will be sectioned off and accessible by invite only. Per the organizers, it is not clear how much, if any of the ceremony will be visible by the public.

The first sign with the John Glenn name was unveiled today (June 28) over the airport's giant new video terminal in the center of the ticketing lobby, reports the Columbus Dispatch.
With light flooding the newly-redone airport terminal, Ohio native and aviation legend John Glenn took center stage today as Port Columbus was renamed the John Glenn Columbus International Airport.

Though he walked with a cane and joked of being slowed by age, Glenn at 94 — he turns 95 in July — stood tall, spoke clearly and was the image of a legendary elder statesman.

"It's quite a thing to have a big-city airport named after you," Glenn said.
