Are there places other than Space Center Houston and the Johnson Space Center worth visiting or seeing as a space fan while in Houston?

Any other museums, collections, stores, etc?

There is a nice souvenir store in Webster called Space Center Souvenirs, I call it the unofficial headquarters of NASA. I've known the owners for over 20 years and have celebrated many significant achievements in manned spaceflight and mourned when we lost Columbia. There is a photo montage given to the owners by Willie McCool's family, who shopped at the store before and after the accident.

One of my favorite places to eat is Frenchie's located just down the street from JSC that has a entire room dedicated to the astronauts. I eat in that room every time I dine there. You may also run into an astronaut there as well.

When I visited Houston back in 2008, the Houston Museum of Natural Science had the MA-2 spacecraft, a Gemini suit with Gemini 4-style maneuvering unit, two A7L spacesuits, and a number of lunar surface tools.

A quick search of their website didn't turn up any evidence that these artifacts are still at the museum, so you might drop them an email to confirm before making the trip.

A few other sites in the area:
  • There is a replica of John Glenn's Friendship 7 on display at the corner of Red Bluff Road and St. Augustine Avenue in Pasadena (a Houston suburb).

  • Diagonally adjacent to Space Center Houston is Space Walk Plaza in Nassau Bay, a small space sculpture garden featuring the artwork of Eric Olber.

  • Apollo Boilerplate 1224 (BP-1224) is exhibited outside the Harris County Youth Center in Webster. The facility and its grounds are not open to the public. If you are going to try to visit, best to contact them first for permission.

What other places of space historic interest can be found in the Houston area? I'll be in Houston next week and would like to find some locations that are off the tourist path.

Editor's note: Threads merged.

About an hour south of Houston in Galveston, on the Gulf Coast, there's the Lone Star Flight Museum. Though primarily focusing on aircraft (there are several that are airworthy), it has a Space Gallery that displays a Shuttle Crew Compartment Trainer among other hardware.

The Lone Star Flight Museum is no longer in Galveston. It moved a number of years ago to Ellington Field, about 15 minutes away from Space Center Houston.

It is indeed worth a visit for its new space gallery.

All times are CT (US)
