A friend of mine recently attended a geological field trip in New Mexico on porphyry (igneous intrusive rocks) copper deposits. While driving home to Tucson he passed an elementary school named Harrison A. Schmitt. Knowing a bit about space exploration he knew that Jack's middle initial is H, so when he made it home he googled and found out that H.A. is Jack's father, a prominent mining geologist who worked in the SW US and Mexico. More interesting, he then decided to read an old book on copper deposits, and one of the papers in that book was "The Porphyry Copper Deposits in Their Regional Setting" by H.A. Schmitt. At the end of the paper are several reviews, one by H.H. Schmitt who criticized H.A. for his speculations on continental drift; "The writer (Jack) has some objections to the extent of Dr. Schmitt's speculations on continental drift and its causes and some feelings". Seems that Jack expected a bit of data in support of the speculations. Unfortunately I believe that H.A. passed away before Jack walked on the moon. |

I go to John H. Glenn High School in East Northport, New York. Whoever came up with our mascot did a very bad job. We are the Knights. Go figure! |

Don't forget the stretch of Farm-to-Market Road FM 518 on the south side of Clear Lake (Houston) that was renamed the Deke Slayton Parkway. And the Deke Slayton Cancer Center on Medical Center Blvd in Webster, Texas. |

Streets in the new Valley Bluff Townhomes housing development in Clinton, Iowa will bear the names of three astronauts with ties to the city. Diamond Builders, with John Carroll and Clinton officials, broke ground for Valley Bluff Townhomes on Valley West Drive in Clinton Friday afternoon (Oct. 30) and announced that streets will be named for NASA astronauts Dale Gardner, Col. David Hilmers and George Nelson.Gardner was born in 1948 in Fairmont, Minnesota, and grew up in Sherburn, Minnesota and Savanna, Illinois, but considered Clinton to be his hometown. Hilmers was born in Clinton. Nelson was born in 1950, in Charles City and considers Willmar, Minnesota, his hometown, although some of his family had lived in Clinton County. |

In Lancaster and Palmdale California there is Challenger Way, it was the street that was used to overland the shuttles from AF Plant 42 to Edwards AFB. There is also Columbia Way which leads from the freeway to the gate at AF Plant 42 right to Challenger Way. |
