National Life has created a new company sign. In choosing a space for it, the company realized that not only is the space shuttle monument obstructing the new sign's potential site, but its location at the intersection of National Life Drive and Memorial Drive was never a good one to begin with.Ross Sneyd, director of corporate communications and community relations, said it's a busy corner, so if somebody wants to spend time at the monument there's no place to park. It's also not pedestrian-friendly, lacking a sidewalk. "It's not an ideal spot," Sneyd said.
National Life and the city have agreed to move the monument to a site where the city or the public consensus agrees it should be, and Sneyd said National Life will pay the cost of moving it.
...The city has put out a call for people interested in serving on a committee to determine the monument's future and is considering moving it onto or near Montpelier High School property. "The suggestion has been made, because of the original apple offerings, that depending on where it's located, (there should be) room for a small apple tree to be nearby," Casey said.
She urged anyone who has information on the history of the monument to email her.
