I have been in the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) only once at Kennedy Space Center, on a public tour when I was a kid. We were there in 1975, because the Viking lander went up while we were in that area, and we saw it sitting on the pad on the tour. Back then, the VAB wasn't being used for anything, so tours went in there. I don't remember much about it (I was just 5 at the time), but I recall seeing a full-size mockup of the Apollo-Soyuz inside it. I was telling a co-worker about this earlier today and he said I was nuts as they never had anything like that inside. I checked and my Mom says she clearly recalls this as well. Am I wrong? And if not, are there any photos of the mockup on display inside that building? |

This has got to be the same Soyuz that is in the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Early Space building now. And is this the CSM-119 that is in the Saturn V exhibit? But, where did the docking module go? |

I thought they had a full-size ASTP mockup at the Cosmosphere in the late 90's. |

The Kansas Cosmosphere's ASTP display is still there. The command module was a crew trainer used at Johnson Space Center. |

The Apollo command and service module (CSM) display at VAB in 1975 with a Soyuz mockup are the CSM-105, the same displayed at Paris Air Show in 1973. |

Yes, the display has been at the National Air and Space Museum since 1976. This Block II Apollo Command and Service Module combination (CSM 105), manufactured by North American Rockwell, was originally used for vibration and acoustic tests. In 1973 it was refurbished for display at the Paris Air Show. The CSM was displayed docked to a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft, as was planned for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Program (ASTP) mission that took place in July 1975. The Soyuz spacecraft was made of residual test hardware.In 1976 this combined exhibit was installed in the National Air and Space Museum after its transfer from NASA.  |
