I am flying in from Kansas City, so which airport would be the best to fly into for a shuttle launch? Would it be Melbourne or Orlando, Fla?

If Melbourne, any hotels recommended for the stay? Should I rent a car?

Thank you and please help!

Well, comparing flight prices and airline selection, Orlando is likely the best unless a low fare carrier flies to Melbourne or Daytona Beach (they are usually more expensive and don't have as many flights in on a given day). Orlando is also a pretty close shot to Titusville as well as you can either take the toll road (which is quick) or the older route to the north.

Of course, a lot of this will depend on if you plan to arrive on the day of the launch, or the day before as traffic to Titusville will likely be a headache the day of the launch, no matter where you fly in. Rental car is almost a given and it gives you plenty of hotel options too.

I flew into Jacksonville (one of my old duty stations) and drove down to Titusville (where I stayed). For me, flying into Jax was $80 cheaper than Orlando.

Yes, Orlando may be a little further to drive in than Melbourne, but it's probably worth it for the flexibility its better service provides.

I do hope you already have hotel reservations though, especially if you're going to next month's penultimate launch -- this week we got invited to the last launch in June and all the Cape Canaveral town hotels are already booked. We were lucky to snag one of the last reasonable condos in the town close in to where the NASA buses will pick us up.
