These are photos of the Columbia and Challenger memorial at Windward Beach, Brick, NJ. The road in is known as Challenger Way. According to my memory of our paper's archives, Terry Hart spoke at its dedication. (I lasted visited here after STS-118 landed, which carried Barbara Morgan.) |

Thanks Hart, for posting these poignant memorials. My hubby and I have dear friends in Freehold, NJ, (which doesn't look very far on the map from this)... if we can take some time off to visit them, we'll be sure to stop by the memorials and pay our respects. Thanks for the heads up on this. |

Um, Freehold is in Monmouth County; Brick is in Ocean, about a 30 or 45 minute drive, depending on which way you go.Windward Beach is off of Princeton Avenue (CR 630), which in turn is off Route 70. There are many different ways to go. From the Freehold Raceway Mall, I would take Route 537, make a left on Route 527 (toward Ocean Co.), and make a left on Route 70 (toward Point Pleasant) - but your friends may know a better way. There's also a 9/11 memorial (I think) also on site. |

Hart, thanks for your directions, they will come in very handy whenever we do go. And you're right, it's not as close as I had envisioned... but, considering how far these dedicated astronauts flew for me, I guess I can drive 45 minutes for them! Thanks for your kindness and help. |

Not a problem. I usually take 527 to Freehold Mall from Toms River because I'm about ten minutes away from 527 and more importantly, its faster and I'll do anything to avoid the traffic lights on Route 9!North Carolina, huh? Inlaws have a place outside Forest City.... |

You're giving me a good geography lesson today, Hart--I had no idea where Forest City was in NC before you mentioned it! From my map, your inlaws look to be pretty far west of us, almost in the mountains. I bet it's beautiful there! Anyway, if you ever plan to travel through the Triangle area (Chapel Hill-Durham-Raleigh), let me know. It would be nice to say hello to another dedicated collectSPACEr. |

I mentioned Forest City because it's the "big city" - it's got a Walmart and a minor-league baseball team. They're actually in Bostic. It's all a part of Rutherford County, (I believe), whose claim to fame is that Abe Lincoln was actually born there and not in Illinois. I've gone hiking at Chimney Rock as well as visited Lake Lure (of "Dirty Dancing" fame.)As another comparison, Rutherford County has 18 schools and 10,000 students. Toms River alone has 18 schools and 17,000 students. We usually veer east once we cross into Pennsylvania (heading down I-81), but will let you know if I'm in the Triangle area. Give me a shout if you're up this way. |

I'll definitely give you a shout if we come up your way, thanks! And do let me know if you venture down this way, that would be wonderful. You might enjoy seeing Chapel Hill's Morehead Planetarium--it's always inspiring. | |
