Nice photos! The Baikonur Cosmodrome
Baikonur is an entire Kazakh city, rented and administered by Russia. The Cosmodrome was founded in 1955, making it one of the oldest space launch facilites still in operation. Here are collected some photographs of manned and unmanned launches from Baikonur over the past several years.

Just a "heads-up" for a proposed trip I saw when browsing my "Flypast" magazine. George Pick Aerotours have a trip, in the planning stage, to see the launch of Soyuz TM-15. The trip is scheduled for 20/27 May 2009. As I say, the trip is still in the planning stage, so no further details are available.

No doubt it will be expensive but I could be interested in that.

The Belgian Urania astronomy club also plans to see the launch of Frank De Winne in May 2009 and the voyage won't be that expensive...

There's an excellent article on the lead-up to the recent launch of Soyuz TMA-14 by an Australian ABC reporter based in Moscow, which gives good information on the preparations that take place before launch.

If anyone has gone to a Soyuz launch and share some tips on how to plan, what to expect, what to do and so forth, I'm looking to hopefully see one someday.

Is it possible for a member of the general public to view a launch at Baikonur?

Editor's note: Threads merged.

If you do get a chance, remember to turn around and watch the launch. Not like this reporter!

I am almost ready to go. All paperwork, tickets, etc., just have to repack to warmer clothes.

Still looking for suggestions on what to see in Moscow, what to try (food) and any good travel tips.

We have a tour of Star City lined up plus a tour of Red Square, Kremlin and maybe see a show.

Then off to Baikonur for some sight seeing and the launch. We head back to Russia (Moscow) that same day. Then home to USA.

What a week this should be!!

I plan to go see a Soyuz launch at one point and I am not sure how to get passes to see one. Do I go through the Russian and Kazakhstan embassies or try to contact my Congressional representatives? Also how close can you get to the launch pad without being in the media?

Does anyone have information or feedback about a travel package to see a Soyuz launch? I am interested in making such a trip, and I've come across various tour companies that offer travel packages to view either manned or unmanned launches. If anyone has experience with this kind of trip, I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.
