I recently purchased a small group of signed and inscribed shuttle astronaut portraits. Once they arrived, I discovered that they once had hung on the wall of the well-known astronaut hangout called Pe-Te's Cajun BBQ located near Johnson Space Center. Does anyone have any photos of the place they are willing to share? I'm especially interested in photos of the wall where the astronaut photos once hung, but would like to see some shots of the general interior and exterior. Also, I'd like to see pictures or scans of anything like menus, placemats or the like. Have any of you been there and have any stories to tell? Thank you for anything you'd be willing to share. |

Pe-Te's was actually located right across from Ellington Field, down Highway 3 from JSC. When I working for NASA 5+ years ago, the place had lost some of its personality, but was still a favorite of NASA folks, especially George Abbey and his followers. NASA pics hung pretty much everywhere inside, but unfortunately I don't have any pictures. It closed a few years ago from what I heard. |

It's also mentioned by "Dick Gordon" while in quarantine during the Apollo 12 segment in "From the Earth to the Moon." |

Lester "Pe-Te" Johnson died on Feb. 8, 2020. He was 85. He was the owner of Pe-Te's Cajun BBQ House across from Ellington Field for 28 years, as well as producer/host of Pe Te's Cajun Bandstand at KPFT, 90.1 from 1983 until his last show on February 1, 2020.He as a big supporter of NASA. He had the privilege of meeting every astronaut from 1979 to 2004. At NASA, he was famous for his BBQ and beans & rice. Les was a judge for the NASA cook-off for 25 years and also attended 13 space shuttle launches. Astronauts, Robert "Bob" Crippen and William "Bill" McArthur, came back with Les to his hometown in Eunice for the ribbon cutting for the 4th of July parade. Bill McArthur called into Les' radio show from the space station. Now that's a long distant call. Yea!! In addition, 6 months of recordings were transferred to the space station. |

I noticed too that in From the Earth to the Moon that they mention Pe-Te's. But from the account above, it seems a bit out of place, Shuttle, not Apollo era? | |
