This photo was taken in May 2004 at the Astronaut Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. The four remaining Mercury astronauts John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Gordon Cooper are seated together. With the passing of Cooper in October 2004, it is perhaps the last time the four were together. Behind Glenn is John Young. (Photo provided by Steven Kaplan)

I was lucky to have met all four of them. And Mr. Young, too.

I got to meet Wally Schirra when he was in town for China Lake Naval Air Station’s 50th Anniversary. He gave a great talk. As people were having him autograph copies of The Right Suff I handed him my copy of Schirra’s Space he looked at it and said So you are the one who bought it! Then got to talk for a few minutes about the book. The only Mercury Astronaut I ever got to meet and was the greatest person.

Had maybe my personal best astronaut encounter during the Hall of Fame weekend three years before I took the photo. Late
Friday afternoon, I wandered into the deserted gift shop at the old Hall of Fame. Admiring the display of mission patches for sale were Cooper and Schirra. I walked over and asked if they got a discount. Wally replied no but joked it was something they should look into.
