This photo of astronaut Ed Givens in a Lunar Module mockup was published in National Geographic Magazine in September 1967. Givens had died in an automobile accident on June 6, 1967, three months before this photo was published. At the time of his death he was serving on the support crew of Apollo 7. |

I still find it hard to comprehend that Ed Givens was a finalist for the Mercury 7 group. |

Although Nat Geo had many articles about the NASA over the years, because that one featured an article titled "Houston - Prairie Dynamo," I never realized that there were a couple of related NASA images. Thanks, Ed for showing the original full sized NASA image of Ed Givens and courtesy of National Geographic, the relevant page.I see Ed's helmet has "LTV EM 3" tagged on it. |

I have always felt that there was a great injustice in Ed Givens not being recognised and remembered on the Astronaut Memorial Mirror at the Cape. I was told by their officials many years ago that this was because he was off-duty when he died in that car crash, and was not in training for a space mission. I argued that every astronaut back then was 24/7 and never "off-duty" and Ed was actively working as a support crew member for an Apollo mission. I mostly felt sad for Ed's family, who were excluded and not invited when the mirror was unveiled. |

Colin, agree that Givens should be included-but then so should RADM S David Griggs USN (1939-89), a member of the 1978 TFNG class who made one flight, as an mission specialist aboard STS-51D/Discovery, and who was next slated as pilot for an upcoming Shuttle mission, before his death in a vintage plane crash. He was in training at the time for STS-33, a DoD mission, which ultimately flew in November 1989 but with John Blaha as pilot. Ironically Sonny Carter, who himself died later, was on that flight. |
