Skylab 4 commander Gerry Carr is seen with the Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU) during fit checks at the Kennedy Space Center on August 12, 1972.

Why the two center of mass indicators on the MMU? One for fueled and one for empty?

How about with suit and without suit? There was an insert on the AMU for using the unit without a suit. That could change the CG of the unit.

Jack Lousma told me last year that when Al Bean first tested the unit with the suit on, he forgot to take that insert out and Al could feel it.

Great picture — thank you!

I believe it was called the M509 Automatically Stabilized Maneuvering Unit (ASMU) based on NASA publication SP-4219 chapter 13, "More Favored than the Birds": The Manned Maneuvering Unit in Space.

This unit was the successor to the USAF Astronaut Maneuvering Unit (AMU) which Gene Cernan never got a chance to test fly on GT-9A. A reflight was proposed for GT-12, but it was felt Buzz Aldrin already had a full schedule of three EVAs without having to also test the AMU.

All times are CT (US)
