For Photo of the Week number 1,000 I went back to the source.

On Saturday 21 December 1968 I was 12 years old and watching the launch of Apollo 8 on TV with my dad. He had been interested in aviation all his life and worked for the Dutch airline KLM. He made a casual remark that it would be interesting to follow the developments in the Apollo program and that is exactly what I did from that day forward.

The following Monday I bought all the newspapers I could find, plus an empty scrapbook. It was the beginning of a lifelong interest, which resulted in an extensive archive with over 200,000 photographs.

My dad is no longer with us, but every Apollo 8 anniversary brings back memories of that Saturday in 1968. Merry Christmas!

Great origin story, Ed.

So, let's see... 200,000(+) photos minus 1,000 presented so far, divided by 52 weeks per year equals over 3,826 years of future posts. Maybe you should consider posting daily from now on.

SEPOD: Space Exploration Photo of the Day.

Just putting it out there.

Love the AS-503 launch photo right when the main F-1 engines came to life after a few seconds of first stage ignition. You don't hardly see any exhaust plume images that early on. Happy 1,000th photo-viewings Ed.

I was 13 and had convinced my dad to take me to see the launch. We got there on Friday but too late to take a tour. We parked our car in a grassed area across the road from what was the Astronaut Hall of Fame. We were twelve miles away, but had no trouble seeing Apollo 8 lit up with searchlights.

He slept in the backseat, I had the front (remember bench seats). Absolutely amazing launch on a beautiful clear December morning.

Never forgot that experience so, on the fiftieth anniversary (to the day), I took my 13 year old grandson down and recreated a photo my father took of me in 1968 with the VAB in the background.

Thanks for all your photos, this one in particular.

Love that picture Ed. Thanks for the memories. Just thinking about the gusty decision to launch Apollo 8 on that mission gives to chills, even today. Sure it was a logical progression, but now we were risking lives. What a day 12/21/68 was.

Congratulations and thanks Ed, a great achievement to keep us engaged with so many unseen and historic images.

I don't know if your archive is still growing but I get the feeling that the next 1000 will be equally as varied and interesting. Many thanks. — Adam

Enjoying much this pic(k) for week 1000 and that you could re-create the family experience of the launch years later. Apollo 8 is so special in many ways.
