A view of the Press Site at Cape Canaveral during the launch of Mercury-Atlas 3 on April 25, 1961.

Those cameras were outrageous back in that era. Just hauling that heavy equipment across a sandy beach gives me the shakes. Not to mention balancing that rig so it doesn't get away from you.

Nice dynamic shot Ed ... and it doesn't even show the rocket! Good choice.

I am struck by the strong dynamic compositional synergies happening in this photo. The photographer clearly had a good eye, but was also serendipitously assisted by the wide stance of the cameraman. His posture plays perfectly together with the repeating triangles created by the tripod and the umbrella. Also, the umbrella edges line up to reinforce the direction of the camera lenses as well as those of the grandstands, fence, and pathway. An all around great shot worthy of an award.
