The shadows of astronauts Piers Sellers and Mike Fossum are visible against the port Orbital Maneuvering System pod on Space Shuttle Discovery. The two STS-121 mission specialists are anchored to Discovery's Remote Manipulator System/Orbiter Boom Sensor System foot restraint during an Extravehicular Activity on July 8, 2006.

It gives me vertigo just thinking about it.

(Did they have safety tethers or MMU? The shadows suggest MMU)

The astronauts were both tethered to the arm and were equipped with SAFER (Simplified Aid For EVA Rescue), a small propulsive system worn over their portable life support system backpacks.

Though SAFER was derived from the MMU, it was only designed to be used in an emergency.

I've had a great deal of interest in this STS-121 image for many years. It's one of a series taken at sunrise on EVA 1.

The Kodak DCS 760 digital camera used Kodak's proprietary image raw format. Like Apollo 8 Earthrise, this image has been manipulated by JSC image specialists from what the camera recorded, and the astronauts saw.

The JSC image lab altered the image when processing the as shot raw image file into a JPEG for public release. By altering the blue and cyan color balance, and density, they achieved what you see in Ed's posted image.

Using Kodak's proprietary software the true view that Fossum and Sellers saw at the moment the 760's shutter recorded the image can be seen here. This is the unmodified image the 760's image sensor recorded.

All times are CT (US)
