Space Shuttle Main Engine No. 2036 awaits installation into position on Discovery in Orbiter Processing Facility 3 during preparation for the STS-70 mission in April 1995. This first advanced powerplant featured a new high-pressure liquid oxygen turbopump, a two-duct powerhead, a baffleless main injector, single-coil heat exchanger and start sequence modifications. These modifications were designed to improve both engine performance and safety.
