Scott Carpenter and his wife Renee enjoy themselves during a party at the Cocoa Armory for the MA-6 launch team on April 23, 1962. Carpenter was John Glenn's backup for the flight.

Another nice photo Ed of a humble hero to be! I had the pleasure of meeting him over here in the UK in 2009 and what a moment it was for me!

I met him at Canaveral in 1999. He was signing autographs and I showed him my driver's license. I turned 13 the day he flew his flight. Pointing out the date to him, he looked at me and said... "You really know how to hurt a guy." We laughed heartily.

You know, if that's not a photo that epitomizes more than one part of the essence of the '60s, I don't know what is.

Likely from the same event:

By the way, her name is spelled Rene (rhymes with keen). Now where is KC Stoever when you need her!

Yes, thank you, Paul and Bob, my mom's name is pronounced REEN, not Ruh-NAY, and spelled Rene.

In researching her side of the family (where I discovered she and Buzz Aldrin are related), I found Census data on the street where Rene Louise Mason, b. 1928, lived with her mother and grandmother. Two doors down Eleventh Street, Clinton, Iowa, was the eponymous Irene (nickname "Rene") Jessen, best friend of Rene's mother, Olive (Ollie), and mother of Rene's very best friend, Bobbie Jessen. And it's "Rene" on the baptismal certificate.

Rene, rhymes with "keen."

All times are CT (US)
