A dummy Apollo spacecraft was dropped from a C-130 Hercules aircraft for a parachute deployment test at El Centro, California, on July 12, 1968.

Another “never seen before” image. Of course, the shadows of the parachute make the photo. Great pic(k)!

Thank you once again Ed for sharing unique or lesser-known images. This image illustrates and reinforces what a huge effort the people involved in the early space programs went to in such a short time. Not only did they design a successful spacecraft system, they also pioneered how such systems are tested.

Many people today are frustrated at the pace the SLS/Orion system had developed, given that the Space Launch System uses leftover/ carry-over parts and systems in an effort to reduce development costs and expedite the follow-on system from the Space Transportation System. This image details just some of the efforts achieved to meet the moon landing deadline.

These three red and white striped parachutes became a milestone image that signified a job well done.

Three months later the first manned mission was launched. What a race pace!

This final drop qualified the ELS changes required by CM weight gain. There still was a risk with land impact loads, source of the much publicized mission rule about surface winds at launch.
