STS-51B/Spacelab 3 payload specialist Lodewijk van den Berg, the first Dutch-born astronaut, is photographed on April 29, 1985, as he rides the Astrovan to Launch Complex 39A to board Space Shuttle Challenger. Sitting next to him is mission specialist Don Lind. Van den Berg died on Sunday, October 16, 2022. (Lind died last August.)

That is a great photo Ed. It shows so well what they are both feeling, and for Lind a relief to be finally making his first space flight after such a long time.

Nice picture.

Does anyone know why he is holding an apple?

Ed, you just provided the provenance I have been seeking for eight years...

In 2014, I purchased a "space shuttle Astrovan headrest cover" at auction, but could not find a single photo showing if such a thing existed (I think I may have even checked with you at the time). I gambled on it being authentic as I had never seen another Astrovan artifact offered, but really needed a photograph showing the interior of the Astrovan.

Voila! This photo shows the matching piece. Thank you for sharing!
