At Launch Pad 39A Columbia's payload bay doors are being closed on August 29, 1990, in preparation for launch of STS-35, set for September 1. However, on August 30 the launch was scrubbed because telemetry was lost from the BBXRT, part of the Astro-1 payload. After several further delays, STS-35 was finally launched on December 2, 1990. |

The spring and summer of hydrogen leaks. Between STS-35 and Atlantis on STS-38. How appropriate after the SLS hydrogen leaks. |

I know a bit off topic, but I have always wondered why most, if not all, payloads were installed at the pad and not in the relative safety of the VAB. I can think a couple of possible reasons but can some explain the rational or point me to a good read to why this was done? |

Do you mean the OPF and not the VAB? I think being able to do it at the pad was part of the DOD requirement, plus at the pad you can do last minute work on a payload or change or add ones before launch without having to roll back to the VAB. | |
