Fifty years ago today, Apollo 16 was launched from Launch Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 12:54 pm EST. Four days later John Young and Charlie Duke landed the LM 'Orion' on the moon, while Ken Mattingly orbited overhead in CSM 'Casper'.

Five decades later and sometimes it is still hard for me to fathom that the human race actually did this — more specifically the good ol' USA. Landed two men on the moon, repeatedly — six times, over a short few years. Perhaps the greatest achievement so far in the history of man.

And this photo showing how we blasted all the weight out of the Earth's strong grip! Truly amazing.

All times are CT (US)
