Tension in Mission Control during day 4 of the Apollo 10 mission. In the foreground are (left to right) astronauts Ed Mitchell, Joe Engle, Charlie Duke, Bruce McCandless and Deke Slayton. Standing in the background is Jack Schmitt. |

Nice picture. I have never seen it before.Apollo 10 is one of those missions that was so thoroughly eclipsed by the next mission as to be almost forgotten, yet it was so absolutely essential to the success of Apollo 11. I certainly would like to see more "never seen before" (or at least "hardly ever seen before") images from Apollo 10. Good choice! |

I must observe that in order to get this photo the photographer had to practically be sitting on the EECOM console! |

Even though I was only 6 years old at the time, I still very much remember the news coverage of Apollo 10. Since I was a kid I think one of the things that really appealed to me was that they were using the names "Charlie Brown" and "Snoopy." The other thing that still sticks in my mind is the feeling that if I were an astronaut and so so close to landing on the moon that I would mutiny and do an unauthorized landing. A radical 6-year old renegade was I. |

As I recall the commentary of the time, it might have been possible for Snoopy to land on the moon. However, since it was an "overweight" LM, the ascent stage would not have been able to make it back to lunar orbit. I also am not certain if Snoopy was loaded with all the extras (boots, rock boxes etc.) necessary for a "moonwalk." Does anyone else remember hearing this? Another cSer, Thomas J. Frieling, noted that Apollo 10 was the only mission where all three crew members got to fly again. A very good testament to this fine crew. I think that it is a bit sad, though, that Stafford never got to walk on the moon. |

It was a dress rehearsal, so no, it was never planned... |

Another interesting thing about Ed's picture is that it shows four astronauts (the four nearest the camera) who would be tentatively tapped to land on the moon, Mitchell, Duke, Engle, and Schmitt. Three of them would actually do so. |

I was 17 and I thought the same thing! Heck, when I was 6 I thought Flash Gordon was real. |
