Deputy Director of Mission Operations Gene Kranz poses for artist Robert McCall, who is working on his 72- by 16-foot mural 'Opening the Space Frontier - The Next Giant Step' in the lobby of the Building 2 Auditorium at the Johnson Space Center. The mural was dedicated June 14, 1979.

Great shot, I love Robert's work, I’m an art teacher myself so I’d imagine it was great fun having many of the characters in the KSC sitting for portraits!

Excellent! I love McCall's work, as well.

I'm surprised McCall used live models rather than photographs. I wonder how long each subject sat for their portrait. Were the subjects (such as Kranz) still working at NASA at the time? If so, I'm thinking they might have had to take time out during their lunch breaks or on weekends for McCall to capture their likenesses.

I got a laser image of that painting I got the late 88 or 89. Then the first time I got to see it in person in summer of 1991 was unbelievable.

All times are CT (US)
