A Little Joe II launch vehicle is shown disintegrating after 25 seconds of flight in a test of the Apollo launch escape system. Command module boilerplate #22 was launched at 6:01 a.m. MST on May 19, 1965, from Launch Complex 36 at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The malfunction automatically triggered the escape system, sending the spacecraft to a safe descent.

I remember as a kid, not being aware of Little Joe II until Estes put out a Little Joe II model rocket kit. They also put out a brochure that summarized the LJII program, including several shots of this inflight breakup. Need to find that again...

Here's a little information on the first Little Joe II flight about a year before the one in Ed's photo.
