Astronauts Scott Carpenter (left) and John Glenn stand in front of a Mercury capsule on display at the Cape Canaveral press headquarters on November 29, 1961. After the successful launch of Mercury-Atlas 5 (MA-5), Glenn was officially named as prime pilot for the forthcoming manned orbital flight MA-6, with Carpenter as his backup pilot. |

What a great photo of two amazing heroes! I was privileged to have met Scott Carpenter over here in the UK about ten years ago and what a humble and friendly guy he was. |

Great photo. I too was honoured to meet Scott Carpenter at Autographica, Birmingham in September 2009 and he gave a very good talk to us and was so friendly. I couldn't get over the fact that I had met a Mercury astronaut. Unfortunately never had the chance to meet John Glenn but had a great respect for him. |

I met John and Annie Glenn and Scott Carpenter. It was my 13th birthday the day Carpenter was launched. Many years later, when I met him, I showed him my driver's license with the date 5/24/49 on it and told him he was launched on my 13th birthday. He looked at the license, then looked at me and said, "You really know how to hurt a guy."I have a great photo of it and us laughing. Two of the nicest people I have ever met. |

Another great photo from the archives! I met Cdr. Carpenter many years after his flight, at an event with Gen. Charlie Duke. Nice, humble guy - the only Mercury astronaut I ever met. He and Glenn were very close friends, and were, appropriately, the last two surviving Mercury Seven astronauts before Carpenter's passing. |
