Astronauts John Bull (left) and Jim Irwin are suiting up for LTA-8 fit checks in vacuum chamber B of the Space Environment Simulation Laboratory (SESL) at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, February 1968. LTA-8 was a spaceworthiness test for the Lunar Module. |

Is John Bull still with us? Further to this, how many of the astronauts who didn’t ‘make it’ to the final selection are still with us? |

I think that had it not been for the pulmonary disease, there was a very good chance that John Bull would have walked on the moon, as LMP on either Apollo 15 or 16. He was highly rated by Slayton who said he hated to lose him. And it seems like he was one of the main LM guys from Group 5 along with Haise, Mitchell and Irwin. |

Thanks, as always, for your tireless reminders of a time when America was great and had a vision and the will to reach for the heavens. |

The story of John Bull's life, with some wonderful input from his family, is in my recent book, "Shattered Dreams." It also relates the test that Ed's photo illustrates, and in fact Ed supplied the photos I used to illustrate John Bull's chapter. Thanks again, Ed. |
