Shown at the Flight Research Center in October 1964 are astronaut Rusty Schweickart (right) and Dr. James Roman, head of the center's Office of Biological Research. Schweickart was beginning a week-long test of biomedical equipment associated with the Gemini spacesuit with six flights in an F-104 jet. Included in the test was a 96-hour simulated flight in the Gemini Mission Simulator at the Manned Spacecraft Center. He also flew three reentry profiles in the centrifuge at the Ames Research Center. On October 25 Schweickart celebrated his 29th birthday in the suit.

Rusty made so many contributions to our space program, and this is another one that I was not aware of. Several years ago he told us that when Skylab was damaged during launch he headed straight to Marshall and spent so much time in the pool that he started growing skin between his fingers. And he is as sharp as ever!
Thanks for the great photo and info Ed!

He is also involved in the B612 Foundation, which is involved in saving Earth from asteroid strikes.

Rusty Schweickart should have been commander in the last Skylab flight. He deserved that mission, and more because Rusty was the backcrew commander of the first flight.

I believe Michael Collins mentions a Jim Roman as one of the fellow candidates for the Group 3 astronaut selection.
