Half a century ago this week, the Apollo 12 crew was stepping up their training. This photo of the crew was taken during spacecraft checkout at North American in Downey. But it is dated September 29, 1969, which clearly is wrong. Can anybody help me find the exact date this was taken? Probably early 1969, but it is also possible this is a photo of the Apollo 9 backup crew, in which case it must have been taken even earlier.

This colour photograph, also identified as dated 29 September 1969, appears to have been taken at the same time, with the crew poses slightly different. The same image can be found in the Project Apollo Image Gallery numbered 69-HC-1034 with the same date.

If that is an Apollo 9 backup crew photo, it may have been taken at NAR on one of these dates:

C2F2 for spacecraft 103 - July 19, 1968
C2F2 for spacecraft 104 - August 26-27, 1968

I could not find a C2F2 date at NAR for Apollo 12. The Apollo 12 crew was officially announced (Apr 10) after spacecraft 108 arrived at KSC (Mar 28) in 1969.

Maybe it was taken in September, 1968.

Richard Gordon can be seen in spacecraft 104 at NAR in photo S68-45731 dated 27 Aug 68 (on photo) with this caption:
S/C-104 Apollo 9 crew compartment fit and function C2F2 test at the North American, Downey, Calif. Fac.

My contact at the JSC History Office has confirmed that this is not the Apollo 12 crew but the Apollo 9 backup crew during spacecraft-104 crew compartment fit and function (C2F2) test at the North American facility in Downey, California, on August 27, 1968.
