Half a century ago this week, the Apollo 9 mission was still in progress when the Saturn 5 launcher for Apollo 10 was rolled out of the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center. Apollo 10 would be launched in May for a final rehearsal and if all went well, Apollo 11 would make the first attempt at a lunar landing two months after that.

What was the small platform for on the side of the VAB between the High Bay doors?

In Apollo 8 rollout photos, a wire/cable can be seen going from inside the VAB at that platform level to somewhere on the ground (out-of-frame at right), as queried in another thread. Had that wire/cable been there during the Apollo 10 rollout (it wasn't), it would have gotten in the way.

The wire/cable can be seen behind the Apollo 8 vehicle in rollout photo S68-49471.

Ed, your description gives a sense to the pace and urgency at Kennedy 50 years ago. A mission in orbit and another rolling out preparing to go.

Thank you for bring this history to life.

Everything at KSC was certainly happening at a frenetic pace at this time in 1969. Man, I'd like to re-live that year...
