Half a century ago this week, Apollo 7 splashed down at 7:11 a.m. EDT, October 22, 1968, in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 200 nautical miles south-southwest of Bermuda. The photo shows the crew arriving aboard the USS Essex, the prime recovery ship for the mission. Astronauts Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele and Walt Cunningham are being led by Dr. Donald E. Stullken, NASA Recovery Team Leader from the Manned Spacecraft Center's Landing and Recovery Division.

I had the opportunity to talk to the chopper pilot of this crew recovery. Some interesting things one wouldn't know.

That's a Charlie... but a confidence is a confidence.

Ah, but 50 years later an old confidence becomes an innocent story.

If so, the Walt Cunningham may have let it slip at this past weekend's 50th anniversary celebration at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas:
Lifted out of the Atlantic Ocean into a helicopter that would land them on the deck of the USS Essex aircraft carrier, Cunningham, Schirra and Eisele were in for one more surprise.

"One of the guys on the helicopter had a bottle a booze and offered us a drink," revealed Cunningham to both laughter and applause.
