Apollo 9 backup astronauts Pete Conrad (facing camera) and Al Bean participate in a simulated altitude chamber test with LM-3 (out of frame at right) at Kennedy Space Center on August 31, 1968. At left is support crew member Jack Lousma. By this time missions 8 and 9 had been switched, because the LM wasn't ready in time for Apollo 8. One result was that Conrad lost his chance to be the first man on the moon. |

Apparently for a while engineers were experimenting with different designs for the headsets. In this case I don't believe there are any microphone booms. Instead a microphone was positioned against the top of the forehead. (I have a headset with a similar design but with different straps.) I wonder how effective these microphones were. |

Was there any stance/reaction from Conrad (even years after the event) about the switch and losing the chance to be First Man? |

Fighter pilots sometimes wore throat microphones. Wouldn't audio transmissions have been much sharper if the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts had worn throat microphones? |

I believe Lousma had just replaced Fred Haise on the Apollo 9 support crew after Haise had been assigned to the Apollo 8 backup crew. |

Lousma replaced Haise when LM-3 was still planned to fly on the second manned Apollo mission. In other words, before the missions switched. From the August 8 news release:
Astronaut Jack R. Lousma, 32, has replaced Haise on the support team for the second mission. He is a Marine Corps Major. |
