STS-49 commander Dan Brandenstein has a bad hair day as he watches the Assembly of Station by EVA Methods (ASEM) structure being manipulated with the Remote Manipulator System above Endeavour's payload bay during an EVA by mission specialists Kathy Thornton and Tom Akers on May 14, 1992.

Great photo. I’ve always wondered what is kept in the numbered bags behind Commander Brandenstein’s head

That is not the RMS station that CDR Brandenstein is at. He is at the AFT orbiters controls.

The numbered bags hold straps and related equipment for emergency egress through one of the overhead windows in case of an emergency at landing. One bag per crew member.

You are right, of course. I should have said: "...as he watches the Assembly of Station by EVA Methods (ASEM) structure being manipulated with the Remote Manipulator System."
