Separation of the external tank on STS-2 is photographed by a camera in the umbilical bay of Columbia following shutdown of the three main engines on November 12, 1981.

I remember seeing this shot in AW&ST. One of only two white painted ET's. I followed this mission pretty closely, in all forms of media available at the time.

Hypothetical question (and sorry if it has been covered elsewhere) but if NASA had kept to the policy of painting the ET's would that have reduced the risk of insulating foam breaking off and striking the shuttle during launch?

Painting the tank did not stop foam from coming loose on STS-1 and STS-2 (an earlier discussion can be read here).
