The crew of STS-47 is welcomed back to earth as Endeavour's hatch is opened after landing at the Kennedy Space Center on September 20, 1992.

I've never seen a picture like this looking from the inside out. Great photo Ed!

I take it that the item in the lower center part of the photo is the actual hatch door of the shuttle.

Did it completely detach and get moved so the astronauts could walk out? Or did the hatch door still remain connected and the crew had to walk around it?

Just trying to figure out how the hatch door operated... cool photo.

It looks like they landed at a homeless shelter...

As I understand it, a platform was placed on the hatch during egress.

I haven't seen this view until now, either. Interesting perspective.

I see all the smiles and remember reading a former astronaut asking a ground crew member what it smelt like when they opened up a returning shuttle.

"It smells bad, really bad."

Great photo.
