Three members of the press pool get a tour of Cape Kennedy's Launch Pad 19, where Gemini 2 is prepared for an unmanned flight. Left to right are: Howard Benedict, AP; Mary Bubb, Fairchild; and Alvin Webb, UPI. |

Great shot, Ed, and with two of my favorite people! It brings back so many fond memories of seeing veteran aerospace reporters Mary Bubb and Howard Benedict. I didn't know Alvin Webb (before my time), but was very close and "worked" with Mary and Howard for so many years. Heck, I even got Mary's white hard hat in my collection that she is wearing. On both sides of the hat it reads, "Gemini Titan II Pad 19 News Pool," and depicted on the back-side of the hat is, "Martin Co." |

I had the privilege of meeting Howard Benedict when he was in Salt Lake City many years ago to receive an award from the local press. I got to talk with him for a few minutes. What a classy gentleman. |

Ken, you should write a book. The stories you have told to me alone about the people and events you have witnessed would make a great space history book. And there are so many more. |

I saw a hard hat at the Astronaut HOF this week that I think belonged to her. I also saw a lot of autographs from Ken's collection! |

I agree, Ken should write a book. I've known Ken for over 20 years and I never get tired of hearing his stories. He could probably fill a whole chapter with just his racquetball stories! |

To Ed first, yes indeed, "those were the days" — however — I first came to the Space Coast in the summer of 1968 and didn't participate nor witness any of the Mercury and Gemini shots here. But I did witness all the manned Apollo launches, all Skylabs, Apollo-Soyuz, and 134 of the 135 shuttle liftoffs up-close "live" from the space center. Missed was STS-129 in Nov. 2009, but in addition, I have covered another 350 or so unmanned missile, rocket, satellite, and space probe shots here on the Cape itself. For my buddies Chuck and Joel; Appreciate the kind remarks about putting together a book of some kind after nearly a lifetime of an unusual "space career" of sorts, however, I never did record or write down any of my prior coverage observations, encounters, experiences, interesting stories, nor organize any of the many photographs taken during all of those decades. Both of you are very kind to suggest such a possibility, but in the long run, I wouldn't think such a book topic would merit hardly any interest, yet alone have someone actually "pay" for something like this from a space buff. And finally for Ronpur of Brandon, FL, I hope your visit to the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville was an enjoyable one. Yes, indeed, Mary Bubb's shuttle hat is on display at the facility. I had donated it to the museum foundation along with some of her news media badges and a couple of Mary's used reporting notebooks from the early days of the Space Age. In addition, at the request of the AHOF, about 300 different pieces of my own Apollo 11 memorabilia collection of man's first lunar landing were donated to the museum and first displayed there in Oct. 1997. It was on the same day as the induction of the Apollo, Skylab and ASTP astronaut space fliers took place. While there are some autographs displayed from my collection there, it's only those related to the epic Apollo 11 lunar voyage. Besides crew signed photos (individually as well), postal covers, and a couple of letters, there is a litho of AS-506 on the pad, the Saturn V moon rocket for Apollo 11, that had been autographed to me by Dr. Wernher von Braun during my teenage years, a long-time favorite of mine. |

Well, Ken, if there is no book in the future, please write up any and all stories or interesting info you may have here. I am not much of a cover collector, but always enjoy your posts. To me they are a whole different window into the space program that I seldom get to look through. But the view is great! |

So basically, that entire glass top table is your collection! I plan to get back over there again soon, so maybe this time we can meet. | |
