This photo of the open hatch of Gemini 4 was taken 50 years ago by Ed White during the first US spacewalk. It is the first frame of a series taken with a Zeiss Ikon Contarex Special 35mm camera mounted on his hand-held maneuvering unit. |

Nice photo, which I never saw before. White's golden umbilical cord looks like a snake coming out of the cockpit. |

Beside the umbilical cord, what is the other (small diameter) cord that is coming out of the hatch? |

That other cord probably leads to the 16mm motion picture camera that White installed just behind his hatch. |

I recently saw that umbilical at the National Air and Space Museum; it is awesome! |

"Okay, I'm out" I too haven't seen this picture before. It appears to be at that magic moment when he first left the cabin as so little of the umbilical appears. I have heard that Ed White only got off a few photos with the camera. Thanks Ed! |

Historic image from the first American EVA.Was Ed White able to take any other pics using this camera? If so, can you share some? |
