Apollo 13 astronauts Jim Lovell (right) and Fred Haise (center) sit with CapCom Al Worden in Mission Control during the Apollo 12 mission in November 1969.

Perfect timing Ed. At the ASF show I sat at Fred's table for lunch and Al's for dinner. Great conversation!

I didn't know Al Worden was a capcom on this mission. Backup CMP, yes.

There were three other capcoms that I did know about: Jerry Carr, Ed Gibson and Paul Weitz.

Carr on launch and lunar landing; Ed Gibson for lunar EVA's (as usual for mission scientist); Weitz at various points during the mission. Say 45 years ago now.

You may have a point there. This is not the CapCom console, is it?

Were Al Worden's sideburns always that long?

I asked Al about his duties during Apollo 12. He replied: "As I recall there were two CapComs on consoles back then. One for the surface work and one for the CMP in orbit. I was Dick's principal CapCom during Apollo 12. I don't remember all the details, but that is what I remember."

I assume that was no longer needed after launch, so it could be used for the second CapCom?
